Clashes between rival ethnic groups in Ebonyi state leave 60 dead

Horrific news on the last day of 2011. From Reuters:
Clashes between rival ethnic groups in eastern Nigeria's Ebonyi state on Saturday Dec 31 killed at least 50 people, the state government spokesman said, and police said mobile units had been sent to the state to quell the violence.
The clashes erupted from a long running rivalry between the Ezza and Ezilo people of Ishielu district that periodically flares up.
With all these news of bombings, robbery attacks and now ethnic killings, I don't blame any foreigner who doesn't want to come to this country. Now Igbos are killing Igbos? SMH. Continue reading...

There was no suggestion it had anything to do with wider security problems in the country stemming from a violent Islamist insurgency that set off a wave of deadly bombs on Christmas Day.
But they are likely to add to President Goodluck Jonathan's mounting security woes at a time when his forces are stretched.

"Up to 60 people died in the violence. It is difficult to give the exact figure because when we visited Ezilo community, which was the scene of the incident today ... villagers were still bringing out corpses," Ebonyi state spokesman Onyekachi Eni told Reuters by telephone. "Fifty corpses were shown to us."

Violent disputes over land are common in Africa's most populous country because the majority of its 160 million people are subsistence farmers living in rural areas with few means of arbitrating disputes.
Hundreds of people are killed every year in such clashes, many going unreported because of a lack of reliable information about them.

State Commissioner of Police Adeola Adeniji said the divisional crime officer for the area was killed in the violence. "Mobile police have been sent there and the inspector general has directed more to come," Adeniji said.

Chioma Oke, an Ezilo who survived the clashes, said they started around 5 a.m.
"We heard sporadic gunshots and we began to run. They burned our houses. They said they were retaliating for an attack on them last year," she said.

President Jonathan Declares State of Emergency in Parts of Nigeria

President Goodluck Jonathan has just issued a proclamation declaring a state of emergency in certain parts of Nigeria. The proclamation below...
Fellow Nigerians, it has become necessary to address you on recent events in some parts of the country that have threatened our collective security and shaken the foundations of our corporate existence as a nation.
You are all aware of the security challenges which the activities of the Boko Haram sect have foisted on the country. What began as sectarian crises in the North Eastern parts of the country has gradually evolved into terrorist activities in different parts of the country with attendant negative consequences on our national security.
Will declaring a state of emergency stop the bombings and killings? #Justasking. Continue reading...

3.      Government in an effort to find a lasting solution to the security threats occasioned by the activities of the Boko Haram sect, constituted a Presidential Committee under the Chairmanship of Ambassador Usman Gaji Galtimari, to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the crises. While efforts are being made to implement the recommendations of the Committee, the crises have assumed a terrorist dimension with vital institutions of government including the United Nations Building and places of worship becoming targets of terrorist attacks.

4.   While the search for lasting solutions is ongoing, it has become imperative to take some decisive measures necessary to restore normalcy in the country especially within the affected communities. Consequently, I have in the exercise of the powers conferred on me by the provisions of section 305(1) of the Constitution, declared a state of emergency in the following parts of the federation, namely:

(i)  Borno State
a)  Maidugiri Metropolitan LGA
b)  Gamboru Ngala LGA
c)   Banki Bama LGA
d)  Biu LGA
e)   Jere LGA
(ii)  Yobe State
a)  Damaturu LGA
b)  Geidam LGA
c)   Potiskum LGA
d)  Buniyadi-Gujba LGA
e)   Gasua-Bade LGA
    (iii) Plateau State
a)  Jos North LGA
b)  Jos South LGA
c)   Barkin-Ladi LGA
d)  Riyom LGA
   (iv) Niger State
a)  Suleja LGA

The details of this proclamation will be transmitted to the National Assembly as soon as they reconvene from their current recess, for their necessary action.

5.    The Chief of Defence Staff and the Inspector-General of Police have been directed to put appropriate measures in place to ensure the protection of lives and properties of residents in the affected parts of the country. I therefore urge the political leadership in the affected states and Local Government Areas to give maximum cooperation to the law enforcement agencies deployed to their respective communities to ensure that the situation is brought under control within the shortest possible time.

6.   The Chief of Defence Staff, in collaboration with other Service Chiefs, has also been directed to set up a special force unit within the Armed Forces, with dedicated counter terrorism responsibilities.

7.   As part of the overall strategy to overcome the current security challenges, I have directed the closure of the land borders contiguous to the affected Local Government Areas so as to control incidences of cross boarder terrorist activities as terrorists have taken advantage of the present situation to strike at targets in Nigeria and retreat beyond the reach of our law enforcement personnel.

8.  Let me assure our neighbours, especially within the ECOWAS sub-region, of Nigeria’s commitment to its international obligations as provided by the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons. The temporary closure of our borders in the affected areas is only an interim measure designed to address the current security challenges and will be reviewed as soon as normalcy is restored.

9.   I commend the efforts of our political leaders at various levels as well as our traditional and religious leaders for their support for the various conflict resolution mechanisms and peace building measures that have been initiated by this administration. We call on the citizenry to continue to provide useful information to our law enforcement agencies to enable us arrest the situation.

10. Terrorism is a war against all of us. I call on all Nigerians to join hands with government to fight these terrorists.

11. I wish all Nigerians a very happy New Year.

12.   Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

OMG! I am 1976AD 2011 Person of the Year! *Screaming*

This is like the best thing anyone's ever written about me. I've never screamed after reading a story about me, until now. This is so humbling. Thanks to the guys at 1976AD.com

Here's what they wrote about me...
When Linda Ikeji began her self-titled blog back in 2006 a lot of people derided her efforts, saying it was merely a flash in the pan, bound to lead nowhere, with some even going as far as stating she ought to stick to her modeling career. Of particular note was a story done in National Encomium by popular gossip hag, Stella Dimoko Korkus, in which she all but dismissed any chance of Linda’s newest venture having any success.
5 years down the line not only has Linda proven her critics wrong, but her blog has emerged as what is unarguably the most popular, visible and commercially viable entertainment property in Nigeria’s corner of the Internet.
Wow! Please continue reading...

Whether it was something as serious as the Abia gang rape story which she brought to the attention of not only the government and people of  Nigeria, but also international media, including BBC, CNN and Al-Jazeera among others, something as irreverent as the sham marriage between Mercy Johnson and her Prince of dubious mien, or something as deeply personal as her various pronouncements on her sex life (or lack thereof),  Nigerians and friends of Nigeria could trust her blog to raise awareness and shape public perception of the subject at hand in a major way.

In our case for example, we can’t even begin to count the number of times we’ve run across the office  proclaiming  ’did you see what she just posted’, and we know we are not alone in this regard. Nor can we begin to count the number of times we’ve seen and continue to see stories that she brought to light become the fodder for discussion across various internet fora, with debates raging for days on end.

Ultimately, for being a private citizen who has used the power of the keyboard to best shape Nigeria’s polity in 2011, 1976AD proudly declares Linda Ikeji the 2011 person of the year.

Yaaaay! Thank you so much guys! Glad people appreciate what I am doing with my blog. I really enjoy blogging and I plan to stay around for many years to come. Thanks to all LIB readers, fans and foes. People I made laugh, people I made cry, people I offended, people whose lives I've touched in the smallest way. I love you all. Thanks for being a part of my life. Kisses.

*That's my speech BTW* lol.

15 injured in Gombe hotel bomb blast

No fewer than 15 persons were injured in an explosion at a hotel located on the outskirts of Gombe. The attack occured on Wednesday night and came after a series of bombings on Christmas, Day, which killed at least 40 persons in Suleja, Jos and Damaturu. The Manager of the hotel, Mr. Ojiego Nelson, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Gombe on Thursday that three persons came to the hotel at about 10.13pm on Wednesday to explode a device.Nelson said he was at the gate of the hotel when the men, who were carrying guns, started "manhandling" the security man.

He said, "When he asked what was happening, they started shooting sporadically."Our customers and everybody started running helter-skelter and the one with two gas cylinders in his hands threw them into our reception."He threw one into the reception and threw the other one under the cars parked by our guests in the hotel."The one thrown into the reception exploded and damaged the building, so we just managed to escape through the back fence."The manager said as soon as the incident happened, all the customers vacated their rooms in the hotel. He said the incident was immediately reported to the Divisional Police Officer in Tumfure, Mr Hassan Bappa, who came to the scene with his men.

Bappa told NAN he moved his men to the scene of the incident when the matter was reported to him, but said the gunmen had escaped before the police arrived. Bappa said there was no casuality and nothing was stolen from the hotel. "We are waiting for bomb experts to come and remove the relics at the scene of the incident," he said. He said there was no arrest made so far but investigations were going on. Meanwhile, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Senator Magus Abe, on Thursday in Lagos called for political support for security agencies to reduce the spate of bombings in the country. Abe (PDP-Rivers South-East) made the call in an interview with the NAN, urging the security agencies to be persistent in handling the incessant bombings by the fundamentalist Boko Haramsect.

He said, "The security agencies need full political support of the leadership of the country and the communities; besides, they need to be focused, consistent and avoid distractions. "The Boko Haram issue is a challenge that must be overcome. Take for instance, there was a time in Israel when bombs were going on everyday but today they have overcome it.’’ The senator advised the country’s leadership to be courageous in handling the present security challenges facing the nation. "The Boko Haram issue requires leadership and total courage, courage on the part of the leadership and the leadership must adopt the consistency approach," he said.

Hadiza Afegbua, (pictured above right) yesterday December 28th, was arrested by police at Utako Division, Abuja, for the murder of her husband, Ibrahim Abutu, (pictured above with their child).

Ibrahim was killed in the Parakou Crescent home he shared with Hadiza and their child at Wuse II, Abuja, yesterday morning.
